All United Nations member countries agreed to celebrate September 21, The International Day of Peace

in 1981.
Together we can create a more peaceful, just and sustainable world,

EVENT :
Like
many other previous 2002/3/4/5, and now 2006 Uganda will commemorate
the international day of peace on the UN designated day on September
21. This time round, many civil society organizations have come
together under the umbrella of the Uganda Social Forum coordinated
by NGO Forum in Kampala. The main peace day activities will be
at Mandela national stadium in Kampala, where many organizations
will convene by way of caravans to deliberate on many other development
related topics and among other; peace and security, HIV/AIDS,
education, poverty alleviation to mention but a few. Kabarole
Research and Resource centre is joining the rest of the world
to be part of this major event, centering on the nationally agreed
theme of “national reconciliations is a responsibility all”. In
western Uganda, reconciliation can be reflected in very many different
conflicts that affect the lives of the local people on day to
day basis. Some of these include; conflicts among the minorities
in Kasese and the obusinga kingdom, Governance and political disputes
in Kabarole and Kyenjojo districts, and land disputes in Kibaale
district. The
western caravan that will be launched with activities starting
in Kasese district on the 15th and continue to Kibaale district
on 18th (day for the caravan)for night a camp fire and laying
a peace a peace and reconciliation monument and later join the
other organizations in Kampala on September 21st. by doing various
activities like district centered dialogues, sports for peace
activities, and cultural gala events, we hope that the peoples
of the region will recollect on conflicts that affect their day
to day lives and importantly affecting their development processes.
This recollection, is expected to enhance concerted development
responsibility and find own solutions to these problems. By sending
you this email is to invite you to be part of this recollection
moment, most especially when a peace and reconciliation monument
will be laid at a neutral place in Kibaale district. We hope that
you will join us to be part of and publicize the local peace efforts
we make in every step of these activities.
The
above pictures are from the 2005 Peace Day in Soroti, I thought
these might be of very good use to show the world the Ugandan
civil society has made such tremendous steps to draw the attention
of Ugandans and Ugandan government to peaceful means of conflict
resolution. This event builds into this years peace day that will
be held on September 21st at Mandela national stadium in Kampala.
Slowly but surely, the civil society is trying to encourage government
to put the peace day on its national agenda, for Uganda to reflect
on peace every 21st of September of each year. Kabarole Research
and Resource Centre, started this campaign to commemorate this
day way back in 2002, and Boma grounds in Fort Portal, 2003, in
Kibaale District, 2004 in Gulu and 2005 in Soroti and Today we
join the rest of Ugandans at Mandela national stadium after a
thorough reflection on local reconciliation in Kibaale district.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE MESSAGE
As the world celebrates the international day of peace, Media for
Peace and Religious Tolerance Organization {MPRTO} would like to
join the government of Uganda, the United Nations, Diplomatic missions
accredited to Uganda and all peace loving people of the world in
marking this very important day.
MPRTO believes that the international day of peace should not be
dedicated to making speeches only, but should be dedicated to action
that brings peace in the whole world. We should dedicate this year’s
international peace day to the Juba peace talks between the government
of Uganda and the Lords Resistance Army rebels currently going on.
We at MPRTO believe and pray that the international day of peace
is dedicated to addressing and ending the war and suffering in northern
Uganda and the world in general. Peace is fundamental to the development
of the human race including the perpetrators of violence.
We also call upon the media to play its cardinal role of informing
the people about the need to tolerate one another, the need to coexistence,
the need to address our commonalities and the need to promote peace
in society. We pray that this issue is addressed on this year’s
international day of peace.
MPRTO also believes that this day should be for reconciliation in
our country and forging the way forward for our development. We
also pray that acts of intolerance worldwide should not be allowed
to flourish in our communities.
"If we do not maintain Justice, Justice will not maintain us."
Happy celebrations
