events since its inception in 1981.

Future
Worlds Center; Nicosia: What we are planning to do on 21 September:
The main idea behind the International Peace Day is that everybody
can make a contribution to peace, even if it seems to be just a trivial
one. Or, as Gandhi said: “You have to be the change you wish to see
in the world.”
Writing for Peace
Children will write letters expressing both their contribution to
and their desire for peace. They will either address these letters
to politicians and decision-makers worldwide or to other children
living in conflict areas around the world such as Lebanon, Israel/Palestine,
Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Sri Lanka, Congo or Colombia. We will
collect the letters and endeavour that they reach their addressees.
The letters for politicians and decision-makers will be sent directly
to their respective addresses. The letters to children in conflict
areas will be delivered to relevant organizations and personal contacts
in those countries. We will ask these organizations and friends to
redistribute the letters to children in their environment and thereby
hopefully establish new international pen-pal-ships.
Flying for Peace
Children will write or draw their visions of peace which will be attached
to white balloons filled with helium. After all the visions expressed
through short texts, poems, stories or drawings being put on paper,
we will send up the balloons in one single moment and they will fly
into the sky of Cyprus and the Mediterranean.
Lighting for Peace
On the street connecting both parts of divided Nicosia, we will draw
a big map of the world. As a sign of commemoration and sympathy, everybody
present will be invited to light a candle and put it on the map of
the world, symbolizing the global suffering from violence and the
common struggle for peace.
Drawing for Peace
On the same street, with coloured chalk, we will altogether draw peace
flags (rainbow flags) with the word “peace” in different languages.
Celebrating Peace with all senses
Drinks, snacks and music will be provided in order to ensure a peace
celebration for all senses.
Watching the Struggle for Peace
We are also planning to screen the award-winning documentary “Peace
One Day” by British director Jeremy Gilley. “Peace One Day” is the
story of one man’s attempts to persuade the global community via the
United Nations to officially sanction a global ceasefire day. The
documentary charts the remarkable 6-year journey of the filmmaker
as he meets heads of state, Nobel Peace Laureates, aid agencies, freedom
fighters, media moguls, the innocent victims of war and, eventually,
everyone who was anyone at the UN. Contact information: Kerstin Wittig,
